Gluing bicycle foil – tips & tricks
The material
What material are the printing foils made of?
MOOXIBIKE : These are high-performance digital printing films protected by a glossy protective laminate. Vinyl films (PVC) are mostly used. The graphics are printed with solvent inks using the piezo inkjet process on large digital printers.
In contrast to many manufacturers from the Far East, we only use high-quality materials that are generally TÜV-GS-tested . This has an impact on the safety factor and, of course, on the durability of our products.
Each material we use has been carefully selected by our experts. Most of them have proven themselves over many years (ORAFOL®, 3MTM, ScotchliteTM). According to the manufacturer, no phthalates are used in the manufacture of the product. The product complies with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1005/2009 and therefore does not contain any of the substances listed therein that could lead to the depletion of the ozone layer.
How thick are the films and do they also serve to protect against scratches/stones etc?
MOOXIBIKE: Yes, of course! The films can withstand a lot. They are about 110 µm thick. If you have an accident or something else gets in your way, the films will absorb a lot of the impact. And the good thing is that you can remove the films and put a new one on. That way you decide how your bike will continue to look...
Should I be worried that the film will come off on its own in a hot summer?
MOOXIBIKE : The film sticks wonderfully, just like on cars, for example taxis are also covered with beige film. You still have to use enough force to remove the film, even when it's warm, so it certainly won't fall off the bike in warm weather.
How do I see the reflection on stickers and panels? It doesn't seem to work with the light from my cell phone...
MOOXIBIKE : The reflective properties of the film can be tested by taking a photo of the film with a flash or, what always works very well, by positioning the mobile bicycle light directly between the eyes (switched on, of course). Then you get the same effect as drivers at night and you can see the reflective crystals on the material very clearly.
The gluing
Does the film also stick to wood?
MOOXIBIKE: Ideally, the film sticks to metal surfaces and smooth, sealed surfaces. But not to wood, stone, rust, clothing, etc.
Do the existing stickers have to be removed so that they don't show through?
MOOXIBIKE: Yes, you're right, the old stickers are showing through. However, this is not as noticeable with patterned films as it is with single-colored ones. However, you can easily remove the old stickers with a solvent from the hardware store.
Do I need to work on my frame beforehand? Sanding or something else? Cleaning will probably be important...
MOOXIBIKE: Just clean thoroughly so that the frame is free of grease, otherwise the film will not stick.
If I have to start again when gluing, will the film stick again?
MOOXIBIKE: If your hands and the bike are free of grease, you can briefly lift the standard film (patterned or plain) during the gluing process and reapply it. However, after a longer gluing time, this no longer works. And unfortunately, it doesn't work with the reflective stickers and films either, as these have a different adhesive on the back and are therefore not suitable for full gluing.
My bike has a lot of bends, what is the best way to proceed?
MOOXIBIKE: The film expands with the help of heat. Unfortunately, you can't shrink it. That's why it's advisable to always stick it over the "hill". So put the film "in the valley" and then stick it over the "hill".
If you want to glue the bend, start with the straight part and then work your way down to the inward-curved area (valley). Here the foil will no longer give way when cold. With the heat of a normal hair dryer (it's best to have a second person hold the dryer), the foil will soften and you can glue the curved area...
Can I also use the film on carbon frames, and also stick film to film?
MOOXIBIKE: If the surface is free of grease, you can also stick stickers onto carbon wheels. Foil on foil works wonderfully...
Can I also use the films for walkers, wheelchairs or strollers to make them a bit prettier?
MOOXIBIKE: Our films stick to all painted metallic surfaces. And the reflective films also increase visibility in traffic.
The removal
Can the film be removed without leaving any residue, or which one should I use?
The standard long films in mini, maxi and mega have special adhesive properties on metal surfaces. This special adhesive makes it possible to remove the film in large pieces and usually without leaving any adhesive residue.
What do I do if there are some adhesive residues left after removing the film?
Adhesive residue can be removed with a solvent from the hardware store.
Are there any adhesive residues left on the reflective films?
The reflective films have the great property of reflecting. This film is thicker than the long bicycle films. To ensure good adhesion, they are equipped with a stronger adhesive, so that adhesive residue remains, which can, however, be 100% removed with solvent.
Can the reflective films that are stuck over a bicycle film be removed together with the film?
Because the long bicycle films can be removed without leaving any adhesive residue, a reflective film can also be removed without leaving any residue if it has been stuck onto a bicycle film.
